Keyword Optimization in the Modern Era

Although digital marketing has evolved considerably over the years, search engine marketing is still one of the most important forms of digital marketing available. In fact, due to the rise of mobile phones and an immediate need for information, the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) may be at an all-time high.

However, there’s a science behind getting a high Google keyword ranking. It’s not as simple as stuffing your page full of the words you believe will drive people to your site. Instead, modern methodology is reliant upon two main tactics that will endear your site to mobile users – the kind of customers that are ready to make a purchase right now from you, if they’re able to find you.

Long-Tailed Keywords

One of the more notable Google keyword trends is long-tailed keywords. They work because they add an additional layer to already established keywords that have long since been claimed by bigger businesses.

Traditional SEO focused itself around specific keywords that individual businesses could market. For instance, McDonald’s might use “cheeseburger” as a keyword. However, that doesn’t leave much room for newer businesses trying to promote their products.

The long tail is what allows businesses to really differentiate themselves. While “cheeseburger” might not be an achievable keyword, more specific keywords like a specific type of cheeseburger or, more commonly, “cheeseburger” followed by the store’s location, help businesses to stand out in searches and attract interest from motivated customers.

“Near Me” Keywords

Taking the long-tailed keyword approach a step further, adding “near me” to your keyword people in your immediate area to discover your location. Doing this allows you to take advantage of Google’s location tracking abilities, linking those searchers with businesses in the immediate area.

What’s particularly interesting is that “near me” seems like a mobile-first strategy, but it’s proven to be very effective for desktop users as well. In fact, 80 percent of clicks on “near me” search results come from desktop searchers.

No matter what type of business you’re promoting, incorporating long-tailed and “near me” keywords is always beneficial. If you’d like more information about how to best use keywords to optimize your site, don’t hesitate to contact us today.
