There are a few ongoing costs associated with your website and sometimes these get a little confusing. Let’s break it down for you.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is the space on the interest where your website lives. The files that make up up your website are stored online and typically you pay a monthly or yearly fee to a web hosting company for this service.
What to look for in a web hosting company?
We have been working with various web hosting companies for over 15 years and and find that the quality of service they offer changes as time goes by.
3 Web Hosting Essentials:
Speed: it’s important the technology used to host your website is fast and that that you’re not sharing your hosting space with too many other websites. This may slow your website down.
Support: 24/7 support with a short wait time is essential. If you’re website is down, you’re probably losing business.
Security: With hacking on the increase, today we need higher levels of security in our hosting environments. Purchase an SSL certificate with your hosting package. The cost of this varies from company to company from free to $250 a year.
Web Hosting Recommendations
Crazy Domains: they have been around for years, are cost effective and provide really good customer support.
Panthur: are an Australian company with excellent business web hosting options, fast servers, 24/7 customer support and free SSL for some packages.
SiteGround: Our favourite hosting company at the moment. They specialise in WordPress hosting, are highly rated across the internet and provide excellent support.
What is domain name hosting?
A domain name is your web address eg mywebsite.com.au. To claim ownership of a domain name you register the domain name with a company and pay a yearly fee to maintain ownership.
You don’t have to use the same company as your web hosting to register your domain name however it makes life a lot easier to have both your web and domain name hosting under one roof.
What Is Email Hosting?
All web hosting packages offer free email hosting. However, for greater functionality options, you might want to use third party option such as Google’s G-Suite or Microsoft Office 365.
If you’re using Microsoft Office 365 check that this is supported by your hosting company.
